Saint Clair Make Their Mark With Debut EP ‘Something To Be Said’

London four-piece Saint Clair have shared their debut EP Something To Be Said, out now via Black Butter Records, marking an assured introduction from one of the capital's fast-emerging new bands.

Arriving alongside its brooding title track, the four-song project captures the uncomfortable transition between youthful idealism and adult reality, exploring relationships, responsibility and the growing pains that emerge somewhere in between.

“As we wrote Something To Be Said, we landed on a handful of songs that live in the same world,” the band explain. “Toby’s unfiltered emotions are on full display with the music helping to heighten them; simple and human yet unique and relatable.”

Across the EP, Saint Clair turn those emotions into something visceral. ‘Gretchen’ captures a romantic relationship beginning to buckle beneath the weight of competing responsibilities, while ‘Warm’ sees frontman Toby Bardsley stepping into a more protective familial role. Previous single ‘Too Young To Notice’, meanwhile, looks back on the turbulence of growing up with the clarity that only hindsight can provide.

At its centre is the EP's eponymous track, ‘Something To Be Said’, where sludgy, slow-burning basslines collide with soaring guitar lifts as the band navigate the uneasy space between love and conflict. The single arrives accompanied by an intimate live performance video shot by Lucas Murray-Reynolds.

Formed around Bardsley, guitarist Lawrence Bordean, bassist Adam Anderson and drummer Beth Diana, Saint Clair's sound thrives as much on restraint as it does distortion. Fragile moments of tenderness sit alongside bursts of feedback, with the band increasingly embracing the power of knowing when not to play.

“There is always a temptation to do too much as an instrumentalist,” Bardsley explains. “We’ve gone past that in favour of trying to serve the song itself. We want to be a songs band, not a musicians’ band… sometimes you’ve gotta ask yourself what would Ringo do?”

It's a philosophy that appears to be paying off. Since launching in April with two sold-out London showcases, Saint Clair have already appeared at Sound City, The 100 Club, Amsterdam's London Calling and The Great Escape, where they packed out Brighton's Green Door Store.

Now, with their debut EP finally out in the world, the band are taking things on the road. A run of headline dates will see them hit Brighton, London, Milton Keynes and Bristol, alongside festival appearances at Tramlines, Truck Festival and Wilderness this summer.

Raw, restrained and refreshingly focused on the song above everything else, Something To Be Said feels like the opening statement of a band with plenty more left to say.
