The singer-songwriter returns with an atmospheric, synth-infused pop track while supporting Ruel on his UK and European tour.

Breakout singer-songwriter Sadie Jean has unveiled her new single, “Scared to Be in Love,” an atmospheric, bedroom-pop-inspired track that explores the anxiety, hesitation and frustration that can come with falling for someone who is afraid to commit.

Built around synth-infused production and a fuller, bolder sound, the release signals a fresh sonic chapter for the artist while retaining the candid emotional storytelling that has become central to her music. On the track, Jean examines the uncertainty of being caught in romantic limbo, as one person struggles to let go of their fears and fully embrace a relationship.

Speaking about the inspiration behind the single, Jean revealed that it draws from a personal experience of falling for someone even more avoidant than herself.

“Committing to someone and going for it is terrifying, but at a certain point it becomes exhausting to live in that limbo indefinitely, and this song is about the frustration that inevitably comes with that,” she explained.

Although thematically connected to her debut album, Early Twenties Torture, Jean describes the new release as feeling “super fresh and fun” sonically, highlighting her willingness to explore new production styles while continuing to draw from the complexities of young adulthood and relationships.

“Scared to Be in Love” follows “Good Ones,” which arrived in May and was praised by NYLON as “a breakup song for the ages.” Both singles build on the foundations established by Early Twenties Torture, released last autumn, which earned recognition from publications including FLOOD, NYLON, Ones To Watch and HITS.

Jean’s ability to turn personal experiences into relatable pop narratives has also attracted wider critical attention. HITS has highlighted her gift for translating complicated emotions into memorable melodies, while HUNGER has described her as TikTok’s favourite “heartbreak poet.”

Away from the studio, Jean is currently on the road supporting Ruel on his UK and European tour, performing the new single live for audiences across the continent. The run follows a support appearance with Alanis Morissette last month and Jean’s own extensive global headline tour earlier this year.

The tour continues with dates in Prague, Milan, Zurich, Barcelona and Madrid, concluding on 30 October.

With “Scared to Be in Love,” Sadie Jean continues to develop her sound while remaining rooted in the vulnerable, emotionally direct songwriting that has helped her connect with listeners. A music video for the single is also on the way.
