Brighton-based indie-pop and folk artist frances mistry unveils her brand new EP leave myself behind, arriving alongside its final single, ‘whydoitry?’.

The four-track project sees mistry continue to carve out a space entirely her own, blending intimate songwriting and vulnerable lyricism with off-kilter pop, indie and alt-folk. Closing the EP, ‘whydoitry?’ turns its attention towards the frustrations of being a young artist navigating an industry that can leave you questioning your own worth.

Speaking on the meaning behind the new track, mistry shares: ‘whydoitry?’ is about feeling insignificant within the music industry and feeling taken advantage of from industry people who promise you great things but then mess you around. it's also to do with being a woman in music and playing gigs surrounded by men who don't listen or who act like you're not meant to be there.”

Musically, ‘whydoitry?’ is unmistakably frances mistry. Bouncy rhythms, a slightly wonky pop sensibility and an off-kilter edge give the track a restless energy, while her emotive vocal delivery keeps the vulnerability at its core. It's a playful but pointed final statement, capturing the tension between wanting to keep pushing forward and questioning whether it's all worth it.

leave myself behind has been taking shape since mistry first introduced the project with ‘snake pit’ in April. Joined by the previously released ‘i let it get to me again’ and the title track ‘leave myself behind’, the EP brings together the different sides of her songwriting without settling neatly into one genre.

The release arrives at an exciting point in mistry's live career, with the artist set to embark on her first UK headline tour this September. Taking leave myself behind across Brighton, Birmingham, Sheffield, Edinburgh, Manchester, Bath and London, the run marks another major step forward for one of the UK's most compelling emerging indie voices.

The tour follows a recent support slot with Girl in the Year Above at a secret woodland show, alongside previous appearances supporting Paris Paloma, Of Monsters And Men and Alfie Templeman.
