DUMMY ANNOUNCE NEW ALBUM ‘DO YOU LOVE THE COLOR OF THE SKY?’

Los Angeles five-piece announce their new album for October 16th via Polyvinyl Record Co., sharing lead single and video “Full Spectrum Dominance” alongside details of a North American tour.

Los Angeles band Dummy are entering a new era. The five-piece — Alex Ewell, Emma Maatman, Nathan O’Dell, Joe Trainor and Lance Umble — have announced their new album, do you love the color of the sky?, set for release October 16th via Polyvinyl Record Co.

Alongside the announcement comes lead single “Full Spectrum Dominance”, an explosive new track that sees Dummy turn their attention towards A.I., technology and the increasingly complicated relationship between automation and human creativity.

Described as the band's “anti-zeitgeist record”, do you love the color of the sky? finds Dummy stepping away from the noise of the moment and embracing their own strange, insular universe. Following 2024's Free Energy and its remix companion Bubbelibrium DLC, the new record trades some of the optimism of rave culture for something more sceptical, while retaining the band's instinct for melody and movement.

The result is a record that pulls from post-rock, drone and experimental electronic music, with influences ranging from Seefeel and Windy & Carl to Laika and Disco Inferno, before dressing those ideas in the brighter colours of early Björk, The Sundays and Madonna's Ray of Light.

It's a combination that allows Dummy to sound both familiar and forward-thinking, with shimmering pop instincts sitting alongside more politically charged ideas.

Lead single “Full Spectrum Dominance” is a perfect example. Guitarist Joe Trainor explains that the song began with the intention of making something heavier, jokingly becoming the band's “nu metal song”, before the addition of tambourine pushed it somewhere more danceable — “Deee-Lite meets Deftones.”

Keyboardist Emma Maatman expands on the track's ideas, describing it as a commentary on the way tech billionaires have embraced A.I. as a new source of power, while questioning the human labour and creativity being harvested to make that technology possible.

The accompanying video, directed and animated by Matt Wells (POST MAN), takes those themes into a surreal visual world of 3D animation, found imagery and motion graphics. Drawing from late-'90s UK music videos, cyberpunk cinema and early CGI demonstrations, the video explores A.I. as a modern form of alchemy.

do you love the color of the sky? also arrives after an intense period on the road for Dummy. Following Free Energy, the band played approximately 113 shows across around 150 days, touring extensively throughout the US and making two trips to Europe.

That experience has left a clear mark on the new album.

“Touring has had a huge impact on us and our music,” says Alex Ewell, and the new record reflects a band increasingly confident in allowing its music to evolve through live performance rather than trying to replicate everything perfectly on stage.

Dummy have built their reputation on that combination of experimentation and sheer commitment, earning praise from outlets including Uncut, Pitchfork, The Line of Best Fit, Far Out and Rolling Stone along the way.

Now, with do you love the color of the sky?, they appear to be pushing that approach further — creating a record that is politically sharper, sonically adventurous and unmistakably their own.
