DAWUNA MAKES TRUE PANTHER DEBUT WITH ENVELOPING NEW ALBUM LOVE’S ARP

Baltimore-based artist Dawuna ushers in a new chapter with Love’s Arp, his debut album for True Panther Records. Blending hazy lo-fi R&B, avant-garde soul and immersive DIY sound design, the 13-track collection explores the many complexities of love, drawing on the rich textures of the Black musical diaspora.

Out now, Love’s Arp sees Dawuna — the project of first-generation Ugandan-American artist Ian Mugerwa — at his most expansive and emotionally charged. Rooted in traditional East African rhythms, vintage gospel and the pulse of modern house and techno, the record moves between intimate devotion and existential uncertainty, with its intricate arrangements growing increasingly complex as the album unfolds.

The release arrives alongside a visualiser for focus track ‘Love Jaunt’, while standout single ‘Love’s Ekongo’ has already earned praise from The New York Times, which described its sound as “hazy, lo-fi R&B... smitten but bewildered.” Further singles ‘Be Careful II’ and ‘Wet Sheets / Lip Gloss’ have showcased the album’s inventive sonic palette, with the latter earning a spot on Rolling Stone’s Songs You Need To Know.

Following the cult acclaim of 2020’s Glass Lit Dream, alongside 2024’s Naya and the recent mixtape African Family Laptop Musick, Dawuna continues to push his sound into new territory. Love’s Arp is a deeply personal, genre-blurring exploration of connection, culture and the unpredictable nature of falling in love.
