BabyStep Bandcamp Picks: Shauna

Underdog is an infectious dance track produced by Shauna X Kahreign and MCd in Kahreign’s usual charismatic flow. Her track ascends listeners to celestial heights, there’s an almost spiritual element to how uplifting Kahreign’s flow is. A sonic exchange between Kahreign and Shauna enrich the track with a unique dynamic. We caught with Shauna about what tracks she's been listening to on Bandcamp at the moment.

October Trax – Roo Honeychild

Brought this EP the second I heard the Portrait of a Lady on Fire sample. Really clever use of this sample, the way Roo flips it into a footwork floor filler is truly iconic. Cannot wait to drop this first rave back.

Kengaral Electrohits Vol. 2 – V/A

Mamba Negra are a Brazilian collective creating safe spaces for people of marginalised genders and the LGBT+ community in Sao Paulo. The second instalment of their V/A comp, released on their own Mamba Recs, complies hot and tasty underground club cuts from producers around Latin America. All will get you movin’ and groovin’, but my pick is Entropy-Entropy – Stays Light, a slice of dirty acid for a 2am sweaty basement rave.

Edits To Cry To – Usher Lavelle

We all need the occasional cry on the d floor, and this EP will have you sobbing into your Red Stripe. All 5 tracks are sad bangers, but the Red Wine Cry Edit of Dua Lipa’s Don’t Start Now makes me feel things. Sometimes you need to slow things down and we’re all going to get a bit emotional first rave back anyway, so why not embrace it?

ECHO 802.11 / 4U – DJ Floor

Been rinsing DJ Floor’s tracks in my Steam Radio shows, my go to for rave ready tools (check out the Collapse EP and top 10 songs to throw plates on the floor to, in particular). On this two tracker he swaps glitchy 4X4 drum workouts for some big ol’ breaks, and it bangs. Pure jungley goodness.

LK Remixes - Morwell

Never actually seen the Lion King but still down for this hardcore reinterpretation of the soundtrack. Circle of Life is reimagined as a half-time jungle roller, whilst Can U Feel The Love 2Nite finally becomes the euphoric peak-time rave banger it always had the potential to be (listen out for the surprise dancehall flip halfway through too).

Nhạc Gãy Tổng Hợp Số 1 – V/A

First comp from Vietnamese collective, Nhạc Gãy, showcasing Vietnamese producers. There’s something for all the family, techno, gabba, IDM, industrial, breaks, and all absolute bangers. Hard to choose my favourite, but Larria – Undercover is a particular bop. All profits go to the collective’s fund for mental health awareness too so get! on! it!
