THE GOLDEN DREGS ANNOUNCE NEW ALBUM UK GOTHIC

The Golden Dregs are entering the dark. South London’s purveyors of bruised, baroque indie-rock announce their fifth studio album, UK Gothic, due 29th January via Joy of Life International. Marking a new chapter for the band, the announcement arrives alongside the release of their shambling, blood-rush of a new single, ‘Real Thing’ — premiered by Huw Stephens on BBC 6Music — and news of a headline show at London’s St. Pancras Old Church on 29th April.
Co-written with Ash frontman Tim Wheeler and spiritually indebted to the louche, feverish world of Leonard Cohen’s 80s output, ‘Real Thing’ is The Golden Dregs at their most ragged and ravenous. A song that hurtles headlong into danger, desire and the divine, it finds romance unfolding amid a gang of radicals taking matters into their own hands.
“It’s a different direction for the band. The song is exploding with energy and rubble and bloodlust and passion. The story is of a romance in amongst a group of radicals taking matters into their own hands,” says frontman Benjamin Woods.
On UK Gothic, The Golden Dregs’ pastoral indie-rock is dragged through the mud and remade in post-industrial mysticism. A fever dream suspended somewhere between Peckham Rye and the Resurrection, the Body of Christ and Kim Kardashian, Woods’ fifth album conjures a Britain of strange rituals and sacred rubbish heaps — where petrol stations become pilgrimage sites, shopping centres host holy wars, and Lewisham fly-tips are transformed into biblical landscapes.
“UK Gothic reflects on my past, viewed through a gothic lens,” explains Woods. “As in gothic fiction, the characters are vulnerable and the events are unexplained.”
Drawing on a childhood spent along the rural coastlines of Falmouth, his Quaker upbringing and the visionary mythology of William Blake — South London’s original rockstar — Woods has created a record steeped in the uncanny. Blake’s Book of Urizen features on the album artwork, its ancient visions finding an unlikely home amid the debris of modern Britain.
Following the arduous recording of 2025’s Godspeed, and the upheaval of being dropped by their former label, Woods was determined to tear up the rulebook. Armed with a four-track cassette machine and twenty demos recorded over a single Christmas break, the band embraced speed, spontaneity and instinct. The entirety of UK Gothic was learned and recorded live in just three days.
“What you hear on the record is probably on average the fifth time they’d played the song together.”
The result is a ten-track set that breathes, buckles and voyages like a trawler caught in a storm. Woods’ unmistakable rumbling baritone anchors a landscape of orchestral piano ballads and euphoric, stained-glass rockers, drawing on the tactile intensity of Fiona Apple, the dark grandeur of Nick Cave’s Abattoir Blues and the experimental spirit of Caroline, of which Woods is a former member.
Raw, restless and spiritually unmoored, UK Gothic finds The Golden Dregs searching for transcendence in the wreckage. The band is The Golden Dregs. The music is UK Gothic.
