RUBY DUFF KICKS OFF NEW ERA WITH DARKLY PLAYFUL ALT-POP SINGLE ‘KILL U WHILE U SLEEP’

Ruby Duff turns the frustrations of falling in love into a theatrical, tongue-in-cheek pop moment on new single ‘Kill U While U Sleep’, marking the start of a new era for the Leeds-born alt-pop artist and her first release as the marquee signing to Right Tracks Music. Inspired by the familiar irritations of intimacy — from stolen duvets to relentless snoring — the track finds humour in the fine line between adoration and murderous exasperation.

Built around a twinkling glockenspiel hook, infectious indie-pop riffs and sweeping cinematic strings, ‘Kill U While U Sleep’ channels the nostalgic energy of a coming-of-age soundtrack, with a mischievous edge that feels distinctly Ruby. Originally written with acclaimed songwriter Paul Herman, the track was rediscovered by Ruby earlier this year before being reworked with her longtime producer Robert Matthews and her live band, The Party Band. The recording also features Ruby’s dad on keys, alongside string players Ben Trigg and Marianne Haynes.

“This is basically about loving someone but also finding them so annoying at times that you could happily kill them in their sleep (comedically, of course!),” Ruby explains. “They snore, steal the duvet, get on your nerves over the smallest things, and yet you still absolutely adore them. It’s that funny, frustrating side of being in love that nobody really talks about.”

The single’s dark humour extends into its visualiser, the first in a series of short-film-style visuals accompanying Ruby’s new music, following a drag wife hilariously determined to smother her snoring husband. The release arrives as Ruby enters a new chapter with Right Tracks Music, the boutique label and publishing company founded by Chrysalis co-founder Chris Wright CBE.

With support from BBC Introducing, CLASH, Wonderland and The Line of Best Fit, alongside appearances at The Great Escape, Reeperbahn Festival and Kendal Calling, Ruby Duff continues to carve out her own lane in theatrical, character-driven alt-pop.
