teethin: Social Commentary with Fangs

ree

There’s no shortage of bands trying to channel chaos right now — but few sound like they actually live it. Welsh-formed collective teethin are the real deal: a snarling fusion of punk, techno, and rock, built on frustration, unity, and a refusal to play it safe. Led by Greek-Welsh musician James Minas — raised in a circus by punk-era parents — the band’s debut collection isn’t just noise; it’s a statement.

Across tracks like THROWIN SHAPES, LARA SCOFFED and DUD, they tear into class cosplay, apathy, and the hollow posturing of “beige” nepo-baby music. Their sound — wired with fury and euphoria — reflects the cultural mix within the group, whose members trace roots from Athens to the Welsh Valleys, Ukraine and the Philippines.

As Minas puts it: “Our brains are chaotic but we’re beautiful, deep down.” It’s that duality — beauty within chaos — that defines teethin. A movement more than a band, they’re proof that rebellion still has teeth.

You’ve described teethin as “social commentary with fangs.” What’s the bite you want people to feel when they hear your debut collection?

Like Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

James, your upbringing in a circus surrounded by punk culture is such a unique starting point. How do those early experiences of chaos, community, and creativity filter into the band’s music now?

You pretty much said it - chaos, community (emphasis on Unity) and creativity is all there. The shows themselves in the circus were pure misfit life and us lot feel like misfits. So many shows we’ve been at and stood out to the rest of the bill as “tapped” or whatever, we should probs learn to chill a bit. Actually no we shouldn’t. It’s all controlled chaos though, the beauty within the chaos is what we look for, our brains are chaotic but we’re beautiful, deep down.

The Welsh Valleys and the scars of Thatcherism seem to loom large in your lyrics. How much is teethin a response to that environment, and how much is it about wider frustrations with the state of the UK post-Brexit?

As much as we talk about the state of the UK and the scum that are politicians nowadays, we don’t wanna add to the post-punk saturated market. It’s all posh English voices talking about injustice and honestly, it’s fucking lame to us. We wanna talk about what we know and the bullshit and beauty that comes with it. We don’t think we have some unique angle when talking about UK politics, we don’t, we just know what we in Wales have had to put up with for generations and it’d be nice to hear that represented more. Cymru am byth.

The band’s line-up brings together people with roots in Athens, the Valleys, Ukraine, and the Philippines. How does that mix of backgrounds influence the sound and the way you write together?

I guess like, it’s part of the reason the music is so all over the place? In a good way but yeah, when asked time and time again “what genre are you” it’s hard to answer, we love that.

Tracks like LARA SCOFFED and DUD call out class cosplay and “beige” nepo-baby music. Do you see teethin as part of a new wave of artists confronting these issues head-on, or more as outsiders making noise on their own terms?

Definitely more as outsiders making noise on our own terms.

This is a really thought-provoking analysis of how art holds up a mirror to society. That pressure to perform and meet high expectations in creative fields reminds me of the intense preparation needed for high-stakes academic evaluations. For nursing students, that pressure often centers on the HESI exam. When feeling overwhelmed, looking into HESI exam help services for structured guidance on study strategies and time management can be a practical way to build confidence and ensure you're presenting your knowledge effectively.

I really enjoyed reading the Teethin’ feature, it’s such a sharp take on modern social commentary, mixing creativity with critique in a way that really stands out. In a similar sense, platforms offering Online Marketing Class Help empower learners to express ideas strategically and effectively. Both show how mastering communication, whether through art or education, can inspire deeper understanding and meaningful engagement.
