Manchester alt/rock four-piece SerpentS are back with a new single, and Midnight Murderess isn't exactly interested in playing nice.
Built around lively guitars, playful harmonies and a hefty dose of 2000s nostalgia, the track finds the band mixing glossy pop-rock instincts with a sharper modern edge. The result is a confident, mischievous anthem that knows exactly what it's doing.
The band describe it as a “fun, glamorous hype song” with a deliberately unserious streak — seductive, chaotic and made for turning the volume up.
Midnight Murderess follows SerpentS' debut single Nerve, an equally defiant introduction that tackled assertion and retribution. The band have also announced their debut EP, Let Loose & Join A Cult, due later this autumn, with the new single and Nerve joined by five previously unheard tracks.
There’s plenty more to come before the EP lands, too, with the band teasing further new music throughout the year.
Formed by four friends — Eli, Cerys, Josh and Kian — SerpentS have been building their sound together since college. They reportedly went as far as skipping lessons to write in their basement, eventually squeezing into a studio flat so they could make music together every day.
That DIY chemistry has already translated into packed headline shows, festival appearances and tours with acts including Mouth Culture, Crawlers and Au/Ra.
The band have also had a particularly full-circle start to their studio career. Their first session as SerpentS involved members of two of their favourite bands, Manchester's Pale Waves and US trio Pvris. The resulting track is currently unreleased but is set to appear on the forthcoming EP.
Next up, SerpentS will take the new material on the road in Manchester, supporting Pale Waves at their self-curated festival at Untitled Studio on 11 September, before returning for their own headline show at Soup on 14 November.
For a band who've been writing together for years, Midnight Murderess feels like SerpentS properly kicking the door open.
And they're only just getting started.
