James Liandu: Tracks That Shaped My Sound

James Liandu from Dundee, Scotland, is a musician who draws from a wide array of influences, including every song he's played, every project he's worked on, and his everyday experiences. This rich tapestry of inspiration allows him to create music that's deeply personal yet universally resonant.

Since his debut EP in 2020, Liandu has released four singles, each showcasing a different aspect of his musical identity. Rather than confining himself to a single genre, he explores a variety of styles, creating a unique sound that's distinctly his own. We spoke to him about the tracks that shaped his sound.

What Kinda Music- Tom Misch and Yussef Dayes

When I first heard about this collaboration happening I was very excited as well as intrigued, as to how exactly the album would sound. This was their first single/first track to the album that they put out for this collaboration project and what an intro it is.

They really explored all aspects of dynamics, spacing, top tier drumming, production and lyrics along with a plethora of experimental sounds.

ATL Freestyle – 6lack

I have always been a huge fan of 6lack since his first major single “PRBLMS”.  From that moment I was hooked.  Pretty sure I bought the song the same week I heard it.  Funnily enough it took me quite a few months to explore his music in depth.  He really has a unique sound and I think that’s what’s kept me coming back to his music time and time again.

The Offering – Sleep Token

Sleep Token are a band I heard a lot about before I actually checked them out properly.  Not many metal bands (or whatever sub-genre you class them as) catch my eye so quickly but these guys are different.  Blending so many genres together with their lengthy songs, heavy breakdowns and breathtakingly beautiful vocals plus one of the grooviest drummers I’ve heard in a long, long time.  The Offering spoke to me like no other song has.

Heartbreak Anniversary – Giveon

Where do I even start? I’m a sucker for sad songs, but this one in particular perfectly portrayed how you feel after a break up whether it was bad or good. Giveon has got to have one of the most unique voices I’ve heard in my life.  I’m sure anyone who’s heard this song or anything from his catalogue can agree with me.  His voice will leave your hairs standing on end.

Where You Been – Michael Barr

With his last pick, I can happily end this with a track I did not expect to discover.  For any metal fans, this was (at the time) the former vocalist of Volumes, venturing off on a solo career.  Mixing elements of RnB, Pop and Soul to bring something fresh but extremely relatable to me.  I’m sure I had this on repeat for a week or two straight.
