Singer-songwriter KYANYT has been making waves with music that’s honest, melodic, and full of life. Based in London, his songs combine sharp lyrics with hooks that stick, carving out a sound that feels unmistakably his own. We spoke to him about the tracks and artists that have shaped his sound, and how they continue to influence his songwriting journey.
Fleetwood Mac – “The Chain”
This song heavily inspired “Miss America,” especially when the guitars kick in towards the end. There’s this feeling of tension and release, that unstoppable momentum, which I wanted to capture in my own way. The grit, the harmony, and that sense of something beautiful falling apart really shaped how I built the track.
Teddybears – “Punkrocker” (feat. Iggy Pop)
I first heard this song during the end credits of the new Superman film. It blew up on social media and I was instantly hooked. Iggy Pop’s simple but powerful delivery just cuts through everything. The raw groove and that driving drum pattern inspired parts of “Miss America.” I wanted to capture that same rebellious energy, slick but dangerous.
Portugal. The Man – “Feel It Still”
This song heavily inspired “Miss America,” especially the vocal style and tone. “Feel It Still” has that 60s soul feel but it’s been reimagined in such a modern, American way. Being from the UK, I wanted to capture that same essence, that timeless cool, but filter it through my own perspective. That contrast made it even more special.
Prince – “Little Red Corvette”
Prince has always been a master of storytelling through sound, romantic, mysterious, and fast-moving. “Little Red Corvette” really shaped how I approached “Miss America.” It’s the blend of sensuality and melancholy, that feeling of falling for something thrilling but fleeting. I wanted to bring that same emotional drive and colour into my song, where the story feels both intimate and larger than life.
