Gents & Ginger: Tracks That Shaped Our Sound
York’s very own Gents & Ginger are here to shake up the funk scene, blending classic grooves with a daring, modern twist. Known for their infectious bass lines, soulful melodies, and undeniable stage presence, this funky collective transforms every performance into an unforgettable groove-fest. With their debut album, Githerments in Groove, dropping this summer, Gents & Ginger promise to take listeners on a soul-soothing, funk-filled journey. Their sound—a unique mix of old-school funk and contemporary flair—cements them as post-jazz royalty, bringing out the “funkiness” in all of us.
The Meters – Cissy Strut
In your face funk. Old school and fun - How can you not love it? Well we certainly do, having covered this song many times and if you listen closely to our debut album you might hear some things we nicked here and there from it. :p
Vulfpeck – Cory Wong
Cory Wong is a newer brand of funk by one of our favourite bands Vulfpeck, featuring the great guitarist Cory Wong, who named himself after the song before it was even written. This was one of the first songs we played together and we DOUBLE dare you to listen to this and not immediately bop your head.
Maya Delilah – Harvest Moon
A smooth deli-light, this cover of a Neil Young classic starts off as a ballad only to become a little funked up down the line and we love it. It helped inspire us to write a song on our album that contained the same level of emotion, vibery and sumptuous guitar licks.
Grover Washington Jr – Just The Two of Us
An absolute lush soul classic that you can never really get enough of. Although many elements are different to our sound, it's another one of our favourite covers that really sparks joy within people. Although a melancholic and introverted tune, it really does feel warm to listen to and trying to capture that feeling within our own music has definitely been a subconscious if not conscious attempt.
Vulfpeck – Adrienne & Adrianne
Vulfpeck again?? This is no mistake. Their pockets have pockets. This song is another standard which we like to whip out at gigs, especially as it leaves so much room for improvisation, which is definitely one of our main strengths as a band - our gigs are never quite the same twice!
