Olivia Miceli on Heartbreak, Pop Power, and Her DIY Anthem Darling, he doesn’t care

ree

Fresh from the Midlands with a knack for turning raw emotion into unapologetic pop bangers, Olivia Miceli is back with her second single of 2025, Darling, he doesn’t care. Equal parts witty, catchy and cathartic, it’s the ultimate “get over him” anthem — the kind of track you can cry-dance to one minute and scream-sing the next.

Drawing on influences like Lily Allen’s lyrical bite and FlowerovLove’s glossy pop sensibilities, Miceli brings her own voice to the mix with storytelling that’s sharp, relatable, and brimming with personality. Even more impressively, she wrote, recorded, produced and mastered the track herself — total DIY pop star energy.

We caught up with Olivia to talk about heartbreak inspiration, her musical influences, and why Darling, he doesn’t care is a song designed to make you laugh through the tears and sing your way out of a funk.

“Darling, he doesn’t care” is such a bold and relatable title — what moment or experience first sparked the idea for this song?

I love the fact that you say the title is relatable, because that's definitely what I was going for! I first wrote the song after realising that sometimes, people just don't return the energy you give to them, and after endlessly scrolling through social media (trying to find words of empowerment on how to get over it), I stumbled across a post that simply stated, 'Darling, he doesn't care' — and my new song was born!

You’ve described this as a true ‘get over him’ anthem. When you were writing it, were you thinking about your own story, your friends’ experiences, or both?

I think the message in the song is a universal one — it can be difficult to get over someone. When I was writing the song, I was thinking about those things we all do when we're crushing on someone — we've all sat by our phone waiting for a text back at some point! That's why I wrote the song as a direct message to whoever is listening, because I think everyone can relate to it in some way.

The track channels influences like Lily Allen and FlowerovLove. What do you love most about their styles, and how have you put your own twist on that girl-pop energy?

I grew up listening to Lily Allen, and what I really love in her music is the bite in her lyrics — they really pack a punch! FlowerovLove is a newer artist I've been listening to, and I love the pop sound in the beats and song structures she uses. I've taken inspiration from both of their styles, but what really makes all my songs so obviously mine is the emotion and storytelling in the lyrics. What I love most about songwriting is being able to convey emotions and make people feel through my music.

You wrote, recorded, produced, and mastered this song yourself — what did that level of creative control allow you to express that you might not have otherwise?

I've been writing songs since I was 12, starting recording and producing when in university and more recently ventured into the world of mastering. My main aim in my music journey is to hone my technical skills and learn more about producing and ways to develop my sound. I like being able to create music that I enjoy by experimenting with different instruments, recording techniques and writing styles, without having the confines of being told what my music "should" sound like. I genuinely like making and listening to my own music, because I know I've had complete freedom over my creative choices.

Your songs are rooted in emotion and connection. What do you hope listeners feel when they sing along to “Darling, he doesn’t care” — empowerment, closure, maybe even a bit of fun defiance?

All the music I write is fuelled by feelings, and Darling, he doesn't care is rooted in humour, fun and independence. It's bold and empowering, but also touches on the softer feelings of heartbreak and hurt. I hope listeners can belt Darling, he doesn't care at the top of their lungs with defiance, fun and power, and I hope my song gives them the pop-fuelled energy to get over him!
