With sultry new single “Right Back” out now, rising UK artist Jacklyn is stepping confidently into the spotlight. After penning tracks for heavyweights like Jorja Smith and Giggs, she’s carving out a lane that blends early-2000s R&B nostalgia with fresh, emotionally charged storytelling. We caught up with her to talk about the song’s roots, her influences, and what’s next.
“Right Back” balances temptation, flirtation, and vulnerability—was there a specific moment or relationship that sparked the song, or is it more a composite of experiences?
I think it was at a time where I was starting to date again after leaving a long-term relationship. That excitement of fighting your brain on going back to a new person—it felt almost taboo, but also wasn’t, because I was single and allowed to be free, to explore new connections and relationships without having to be tied down.
You’ve previously written for big names like Jorja Smith and Giggs—how has stepping into the spotlight as a solo artist shifted your creative process or perspective on songwriting?
I’ve always written for myself, to be honest, and just happened to stumble upon writing a few songs for other people. When I’m writing for myself, I’m a lot more connected to the storyline—I’m definitely more of a perfectionist. When it’s for someone else, I learn to disconnect a bit and just have more fun with it.
There’s a real nostalgia-meets-now feel to your sound. Who are some of your biggest musical influences, and how do you blend them into something that feels distinctly Jacklyn?
That’s a good question. I grew up with MTV on constantly at home. I’d always be watching Destiny’s Child, Beyoncé, Rihanna, Lady Gaga… a lot of that early 2000s pop and R&B really shaped my taste and style. Now, when I make music, I think I lean into melodies that feel nostalgic but fresh—something personal that still carries that throwback energy.
You’ve had co-signs from Cat Burns and Lola Young, and recently sold out your own headline show—how have those live experiences shaped your confidence as a performer?I’ve always been a bit of a show-off, lol. Since I was a kid, I’ve loved being on stage—whether it was singing, dancing, or acting. Performing and stepping into these different alter egos has always been part of who I am. Going to the BRIT School really helped me sharpen my stage presence and grow that confidence even more.
With “Right Back” dropping just in time for summer, what’s next for you in 2025—more singles, a bigger project, more shows?
Lots more music—maybe even another song before summer ends—and plenty more live shows too :) I’m really excited and proud of the music I’ve been working on recently and I can’t wait to get it out into the world!
Let me know if you'd like a shorter version, a headline, or a version tailored for a particular outlet or tone (e.g. zine-style, streaming platform, etc).
