Scottish singer-songwriter Iona Zajac returns with a thunderclap: new single “Bang” is out today, and it’s a bold, cheeky celebration of great sex, joyfully ripping away shame with each verse.
Trading in the haunting folk of her earlier release “Summer” for something far more playful and provocative, “Bang” marks a sonic and personal gear shift. “A good bang at the end of a boring day won’t fix your life, but it might help,” Zajac says with a wink. The single is a riot of liberated energy, pairing surreal wit with infectious indie-rock vitality — a love letter to bodies finally enjoyed, and shame finally shaken off.
Its accompanying video, equal parts deadpan and delicious, follows a bored woman whose day is saved by physical connection — simple, honest, and defiantly fun. “I wrote Bang when I realised sex could be good,” Zajac explains. “That might sound obvious, but for a lot of us growing up under the cloud of slut-shaming, it isn’t. Then suddenly, it was bliss — and I wanted to shout about it.”
The release comes after a whirlwind year for Zajac. Following a 25-date sold-out run with Alison Moyet, she stunned audiences alongside The Pogues, joining them not just as a support act but as a full-fledged vocalist. What was intended as a one-off tribute in Dublin quickly evolved into something more: a seven-date tour, tattoos shared among bandmates (including original member Spider Stacy), and a new chapter for the Irish folk legends — with Zajac in the heart of it.
Next up, she joins Lisa O’Neill for three shows in Dun Laoghaire, reunites with Moyet at Kew Gardens, and heads across the Atlantic to tour the US and Canada with The Pogues this September.
