Electronic producer and multi-instrumentalist break_fold has released his highly anticipated Planner EP, available now on boutique label analog horizons and Launchpad+ / EMI North. Leading the EP is the new single ‘10+ (Big Licks)’, a track that fuses fractured percussion, surging low-end textures, and the quirky nostalgia of teenage confusion
.
“10+ (Big Licks)” recalls Hann’s GCSE exam days and his father’s cryptic encouragement: “Give it big licks!” The phrase, originally baffling, became an affectionate part of family lore and ultimately the inspiration behind the track. The “10+” came from a file-naming accident during the recording session — a happy accident that perfectly captured the mix of stress, humour, and mild confusion of the period, now embedded in the song’s energetic glitch-driven rhythms.
The EP as a whole marks break_fold’s most personal work to date. Conceived, written, and produced in his Bradford home studio, Planner EP serves as a musical time capsule of his childhood in Hartlepool. Each track nods to his family, North East dialect, and the quirks of growing up in the 1990s, while invoking the propulsive textures of artists like Clark and Plaid.
Tim Hann explains:“The EP is a reference to my Dad, who gave himself nicknames that others in the family then started using. ‘Planner’ referred to when my Dad was in work mode, as that is what he did for a living. The tracks also contain multiple nods to things my family said and did — colloquial expressions and misheard words.”
Building on the momentum of prior singles ‘The Bairns’, ‘Gadgie’, and ‘When the Light Hits the Back of Your Eye’, Planner EP combines northern pride with glitchy precision, highlighting break_fold’s distinctive place in the North’s underground electronic scene. The EP is already receiving support from BBC 6 Music and is set to further establish him as one of the region’s most forward-looking producers.
