Edinburgh electronic-indie group redolent are back with “funner”, the upbeat follow-up to their recent comeback single “ok wow”.
Where “ok wow” sat in the aftermath of an argument, “funner” heads in the opposite direction — a warm, electronic rush built around a very simple moment of happiness: an ice cream sandwich, a sunset and what the band describe as the “opposite of a panic attack.”
The track was born on tour in Texas, with frontman Robin Herbert recalling sitting on Andy’s car, watching the sunset and soaking up a rare moment of calm. That feeling carries into the song, which brings a lighter, more playful energy to redolent’s world.
The accompanying video keeps things deliberately lo-fi, with Herbert dancing and singing through a Scottish field while Alice Hancock works an SP-404 alongside him.
“funner” also arrives alongside redolent’s self-produced documentary, which charts the band’s wild journey from a 2021 GameStop short squeeze windfall to a Columbia Records deal, its eventual end and winning the Scottish Album of the Year award with dinny greet in 2024.
And with the title hinting that there could be more on the way, redolent might just be getting started again.
