Native Sun Team Up With Psymon Spine For Rousing “This Mess” Remix

New York rockers Native Sun have teamed up with fellow NYC outfit Psymon Spine for a reworked version of “This Mess,” marking one year since the release of Native Sun’s acclaimed debut album, Concrete Language.

Out now via TODO Records, the remix gives one of Concrete Language’s standout tracks a fresh jolt of energy, with Psymon Spine digging into the tension and exhilaration at the heart of Native Sun’s music.

The collaboration was built around the atmosphere of a Native Sun live show. Psymon Spine explain that they wanted to capture the feeling of being in the crowd just before the band launches into a song — recording and sampling two hours of spontaneous guitar noise before shaping those sounds into the remix.

The result arrives as Native Sun celebrate the first anniversary of Concrete Language, a record that established the band’s collision of punk, garage rock and art-rock instincts. Produced, mixed and additionally recorded by Jonathan Schenke, with mastering by Joe LaPorta at Sterling Sound, the album channels unrest through a volatile quiet-loud dynamic, repeatedly pushing restraint towards explosive release.

The record drew attention from outlets including Rolling Stone, NPR, Consequence, Stereogum, DORK, The Line of Best Fit, CLASH, CREEM and Nylon, while Iggy Pop has also given the band a co-sign.

For Native Sun, the remix lands during an increasingly busy period for the band. The New York four-piece recently opened for Dinosaur Jr. in Tompkins Square Park and have previously shared stages with Geese, Gurriers, Dinosaur Jr., Bodega, YHWH Nailgun and Cardinals.

Led by Colombian-born vocalist and guitarist Danny Gomez, Native Sun have built their reputation around visceral live performances and socially charged songwriting, pairing punk’s raw immediacy with the melodic instincts of art rock.

Now, one year on from Concrete Language, “This Mess” gets another life — this time filtered through the noise, experimentation and restless energy of Psymon Spine.
