Lauren Minear Shares Driving New Single ‘Ghost'

New York-based alternative singer-songwriter Lauren Minear has shared her emotionally charged new single ‘Ghost’, a driving, hook-heavy track exploring the instinct to disappear when life becomes overwhelming.

Blending alternative, indie-pop and singer-songwriter influences, the track builds around the tension between emotional withdrawal and the desire to stay connected. It’s vulnerable without becoming overly subdued, pairing its introspective subject matter with an energetic pulse and soaring chorus.

Inspired by Lauren’s own experiences of navigating intense emotions, particularly through parenthood, ‘Ghost’ reflects the urge to numb, isolate and retreat when everything becomes too much. Rather than avoiding those feelings, however, the track confronts them head-on.

The song’s central image arrived almost immediately, with Lauren asking: “How long can you live with a ghost?” Initially inspired by the feeling of sharing space with someone who is physically present but emotionally absent, the idea gradually turned inward, becoming a reflection on Lauren’s own sense of disconnection.

That rawness carries into the performance, with Lauren deliberately resisting a polished approach. The track’s explosive bridge provides its biggest release, bringing an angsty burst of tension that feels intentionally unfiltered.

Production came together alongside Grammy-winning producer Scott Jacoby, with the song taking an unexpected turn when guitarist Ben Butler introduced a small cigar-box guitar during a session. Its strange, difficult-to-place tone immediately stood out, eventually becoming one of the track’s defining elements.

“Scott and I both had a visceral reaction,” Lauren recalls.

The result is a guitar part that drives the track while adding to its sense of confusion and emotional unease — perfectly matching the song’s themes of disconnection.

‘Ghost’ also offers a further glimpse into Lauren’s forthcoming body of work, a collection exploring the many forms of grief that emerge while approaching middle age. Across the project, deeply personal experiences are transformed into songs that leave plenty of room for listeners to find their own meaning.
