Julia Holter releases new single "Sun Girl"
Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter and composer Julia Holter is back with her latest single, "Sun Girl," released today on Domino. Holter weaves a mesmerizing tapestry of sound, blending fragments of flute, field recordings, Yamaha CS-60, bagpipes, mellotron, drums, and fretless bass, infusing her signature ludic drum programming and production style with a fresh vibrancy.
The lyrics of "Sun Girl" — "Place me, drag me, move me, Sun Girl" — evoke the whimsy of a childlike game, but as Holter explains, they also represent "being brought out of my comfort zone—into the unknown, playfulness, and chaos." Accompanying the release is a visually captivating video by artist and animator Tammy Nguyễn, adding an extra dimension to the sonic journey of "Sun Girl."
Following her critically acclaimed 2018 album, Aviary, which was praised as an "odyssey stretching, sky-like, across 90 glorious minutes" (Pitchfork), "Sun Girl" continues Holter's musical exploration. In 2020, she composed the score for Eliza Hittman’s award-winning film Never Rarely Sometimes Always. Over the past year, Holter has been a busy force, creating a new live soundtrack for the 1928 silent film The Passion of Joan of Arc, collaborating on Call Super’s Eulo Cramps, and delivering remixes for Beverly Glenn-Copeland’s Keyboard Fantasies Reimagined and Max Tundra’s Remixtape.
Immerse yourself in the sonic brilliance of Julia Holter's "Sun Girl" by streaming it now and watching the mesmerizing video. The single artwork, crafted by Christina Quarles, adds a visual touch to this musical masterpiece.
