Getting To Know: Sam Tomlins

Fusing together captivating rhythm patterns drawn from the Neo-Jazz world, Sam Tomlins is on a musical mission, layering intricate Jazz rhythms with soul-stirring conversational lyrics. Influenced by the likes of Oscar Jerome, Yussef Dayes, Tom Misch, and Jamiroquai, Sam's music is a vibrant tapestry of bouncy rhythms, smooth breakdowns, and continuous evolution. As the mastermind behind lead guitar, arrangement, and crooning vocals, Sam's dynamic stylistic choices strike a perfect balance between complexity and simplicity, infusing each track with his infectious personality.

We caught up with him this week, here's how it went down:

1. What inspired you to blend Neo-Jazz rhythm patterns with cathartic conversational lyrics in your music, Sam?

The main artists that come to mind that have helped influence this EP are Jamiroquai, Oscar Jerome, Yussef Dayes, Tom Misch & Burrial. I love a of classic jazz which has helped inform a lot of the harmony for this EP, but I also love disco/funk music which has definitely been a huge influence for the more rhythmic elements. In recent years I've listened to a lot more electronic artists such as Burrial, Four tet & Jamie xx (as well as early English dubstep), which has definitely influenced some of the production elements in this EP.

2. Sam, could you describe the specific artists or musical influences that have shaped your unique style?

3. Tell us about your upcoming EP "Lotus." What themes does it explore, and when can listeners expect its release?

Lotus primarily deals with self-reflection, growth, overcoming challenges and situations in a more mature way. The EP drops on the 29th Febuary.

4. In your debut single, how do you infuse your vibrant personality into the music, and what message do you hope listeners take away from it?

The perhaps funkier/more up beat elements of Unfold definitely reflects the bouncier side of my personality, whereas the lyrics show a much more introspective part of me. Unfold is a song about growth and learning from past mistakes. I hope listeners can find a certain level of solace within this song.

5. Sam, you have an upcoming performance at the Folklore Rooms in Brighton. What can audiences expect from your show, and what excites you most about this event?

Audiences can expect an eclectic set of original music which will include the whole EP as well as some new music. I have two fantastic singer-songwriters opening, and I’ll be performing for the first time with my band in Brighton. This show will be a exciting spectacle and I can’t wait for everyone to hear/see it. It's gonna be a proper good one!

6. Reflecting on your journey so far, could you share some of your most memorable achievements and experiences, such as your involvement with BBC Introducing and notable live performances?

I think my most notable achievements would have to include performing on the BBC Introducing stage the Highest Point festival and performing live on air for BBC Introducing (at BBC Radio Lancashire) multiple times over the last 7+ years as well as having my music played multiple times on BBC Introducing for BBC Radio Lancashire.
