Getting To Know: Ellie Byers
Emerging pop sensation Ellie Byers strikes a chord with both the heartbroken and the hopelessly in love, blending angelic vocals with raw, emotional honesty. Known for her ability to amplify every feeling, Ellie’s previous single ‘Here’ made waves on BBC Radio 1, and her music continues to captivate audiences across Kiss Fresh and BBC Introducing Kent. Now, with her latest release ‘At Least It’s Not Me,’ Ellie takes a reflective yet empowering stance on moving past toxic relationships. Let’s dive into the mind of an artist who turns vulnerability into strength and heartfelt emotions into chart-worthy hits!
1. "At Least It’s Not Me" has a strong theme of reflection and relief—what inspired you to write about this emotional turning point, and was there a specific moment that sparked the song?
I wanted to write about getting over a toxic ex and being grateful that I’m out the other side - thank god! It can sometimes take a while to realise someone isn’t right for you but once you’re removed from the situation it’s a lot easier to see it for what it really is. I wanted to write about this subject to empower people in a similar situation and to show them there’s a light at the end of the tunnel!
2. Your previous single, "Here," received major support from BBC Radio 1 and other outlets. How has that exposure influenced your creative process and approach to your new music?
I was so happy when I found out ‘Here’ was getting a Radio 1 play. (I definitely cried at work lol). It was my first ever play on Radio 1 so it was a special moment for me! I don’t think it has affected my approach to my new music as such but it has definitely given me a confidence boost. It’s so nice to know that people are hearing the music I’m putting out and liking it!
3. You’ve described "At Least It’s Not Me" as one of your favorite releases yet—what about this song stands out to you personally, compared to your previous work?
I love At Least It’s Not Me. I think it’s an interesting concept and we had a lot of fun making it. It’s slightly more uptempo in comparison to my other releases so it will definitely be a nice song to perform!
4. As an independent artist, what challenges have you faced in building your music career, and how do you stay motivated in navigating the industry on your own terms?
Being an independent artist is TOUGH ngl but it’s also the most rewarding thing ever. Whenever I get a win, no matter how big or small, it’s such a great feeling knowing I did it myself. There are definitely challenges and it can be overwhelming being in charge of everything but I try my best to see it all as a learning experience. I believe the more mistakes I make and lessons I learn in these early years, the better artist I’ll become!
5. Your music connects deeply with listeners, especially in terms of heartbreak and self-realization. How do you balance writing songs that are both personal and relatable to a wider audience?
I love writing songs about heartbreak, it’s definitely what comes most natural to me and I think it’s a subject that everyone can relate to (unfortunately). The songs I write aren’t always personal to my own life experiences, sometimes the scenarios are inspired by what a friend is going through or a line I’ve read in a book might spark an idea. I like to take risks and try to write about situations from all angles.
