David Byrne Brings “When We Are Singing” to Colbert as New Album Era Hits Full Stride

David Byrne has kicked off his latest album campaign in typically electrifying fashion, delivering a standout performance of “When We Are Singing” on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Backed by a 12-piece ensemble, Byrne transformed the late-night stage into a kinetic, joy-filled spectacle—offering a taste of the theatrical energy that’s already earning five-star praise across the board for his current live show.

The track is lifted from Byrne’s new album Who Is The Sky?, his first full-length release since 2018’s American Utopia. Produced by Kid Harpoon and arranged alongside New York’s Ghost Train Orchestra, the record sees Byrne embracing collaboration and creative freedom, with contributions from Hayley Williams, St. Vincent, and Tom Skinner.

That spirit of fearless experimentation is already translating on stage. Critics have hailed the tour as everything from “wild” and “euphoric” to “awe-inspiring”, with multiple five-star reviews positioning Byrne as a master of live reinvention.

The North American leg of the Who Is The Sky? tour begins this week in Vancouver, before heading through major cities and festival stops—including appearances at Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival and New Orleans Jazz Festival—ahead of a packed run of European and UK dates this summer.

With Who Is The Sky?, Byrne leans into a late-career creative surge—one driven less by expectation and more by instinct. The result? A bold, collaborative, and joyously off-kilter new chapter from one of music’s most consistently inventive voices.
