Calvaria Confront Grief and Let Go of Nothing on New Single ‘Ghost’

Bristol’s rising alternative metal outfit turn love, loss and lingering memories into an arena-sized anthem, marking the beginning of a bold new chapter.
Some memories refuse to stay buried. For Bristol-based alternative metal band Calvaria, that emotional weight sits at the heart of ‘Ghost’, their most vulnerable release to date. Out October 9th, the single pairs deeply personal songwriting with soaring choruses, cinematic atmosphere and the kind of arena-sized intensity that makes their sound impossible to ignore.
Blending modern alternative metal with the grandiose hooks of arena rock, Calvaria occupy the space between the dark intensity of Bad Omens and the widescreen ambition of Bon Jovi. But beneath the scale and power of ‘Ghost’ lies something far more intimate: the experience of carrying someone from your past with you, even when letting go feels impossible.
Since forming in 2022, the band have played more than 70 shows across the UK, steadily building their reputation through explosive live performances, a place in the Metal 2 The Masses Bristol 2025 final, and support slots including a recent appearance alongside The Raven Age. Their debut EP, ‘Prophecy’, also earned recognition from Planet Rock Radio, while their forthcoming four-track EP promises to push their sound into more mature, emotionally revealing territory.
Produced by Sam Bloor of Lower Lane Studios, ‘Ghost’ signals a band finding their identity and embracing the vulnerability that comes with it. With further music and UK touring planned for 2027, Calvaria are only just getting started.
We caught up with the band to discuss the emotional origins of ‘Ghost’, the evolution of their live sound, and why this latest release represents the beginning of an entirely new era.
1. You’ve described ‘Ghost’ as the most emotionally raw you’ve been as a band so far. Was there any hesitation around putting something that personal into a song, and how did it feel hearing the finished track for the first time?
There was never any hesitation. Being a songwriter tends to come with a level of vulnerability and being able to channel those emotions into music is what makes it human. It's not always an easy thing to be open but with Ghost it felt fitting. Hearing the finished track for the first time was emotional, both due to the fact it was a very long process from the song's original concept to the final version, and because the weight of the song had never faded throughout the process.
2. The idea of someone from your past continuing to exist almost like a ‘ghost’ in your life is incredibly relatable. Was the song inspired by one specific experience, or did it grow from something broader that you’d all been feeling?
It stems from multiple experiences I've faced throughout my life, rooted in love and loss. The night the idea for the song came to me I was ruminating about times when I'd felt particularly isolated and in grief and that's when the lyrics just started flowing.
3. ‘Ghost’ balances a much darker emotional core with the huge, arena-sized sound Calvaria are becoming known for. How did you approach turning something rooted in grief and vulnerability into a track that still feels massive live?
There were many influences coming into play with Ghost. With the weight of the lyrics it was evident that it was a song that needed power, so we drew a lot of inspiration from arena bands both new and old to achieve that.
4. You’ve played more than 70 shows, reached the Metal 2 The Masses Bristol final and recently supported The Raven Age. How much has that time on the road shaped the band you hear on ‘Ghost’ compared with the Calvaria that recorded Prophecy?
I'd say we've progressed as a band in many ways since our debut EP. We've faced a lot of setbacks and challenges but we're still here. Giving up was never an option and never will be. We've developed our sound into something more mature, the themes that we're exploring now feel more personal and relatable, things that we all face in life.
As a live band I feel as though we've developed ourselves significantly too. There's much more power and energy than there was previously, and a lot of that is down to both growing in confidence which came with experience and due to how focussed we've been tightening up our shows and making sure each time we perform is better than the last.
5. You’ve called ‘Ghost’ the beginning of a new era for Calvaria, with a four-track EP and more touring on the horizon. What does this next chapter sound and feel like — and is ‘Ghost’ a good indication of where you’re heading next?
It's an exciting time for us. We feel as though we've finally found our true identity as a band and we're looking forward to sharing our music and live shows with more people. We're working very hard to make sure that we are top of our game both in the studio and on stage, and can confidently say that Ghost is just the beginning.
