Montreal alternative artist & producer Koko Love shares debut record 'The Cost of Freedom' on streaming now

Montreal indie alternative artist Koko Love has officially released his debut album The Cost of Freedom on streaming platforms, following an initial run where the record was only available through physical formats and Bandcamp. The project, which had previously circulated through vinyl sales and direct purchases at live shows, is now accessible worldwide.

The album’s release is accompanied by a live performance short film recorded at Late Valentine, a Montreal basement venue that has become a hub for the city’s underground music scene. The film showcases select tracks from the record and aims to capture the raw energy of Koko Love’s live performances.

Before arriving on streaming services, The Cost of Freedom was built from the ground up through in-person connection. Fans were able to purchase the record directly from the artist after shows, a deliberate choice reflecting his commitment to physical media and live experiences. Speaking about the approach, Koko Love explained that physical formats help slow things down in an increasingly fast and disposable digital music landscape, creating tangible connections between artists and listeners.

The album’s title track helped shape the overall direction of the project. Reflecting on its meaning, Koko Love describes the theme as an exploration of the paradox of freedom—something that can feel liberating but also demanding and overwhelming. The concept runs throughout the record, which blends introspective lyricism with alternative and indie production.

The Cost of Freedom was produced by Koko Love alongside collaborator Soran Dussaigne. The pair approached the project without outside pressure or expectations, focusing instead on creating music that felt authentic to them. According to the artist, the process became a formative learning experience that touched every part of his life, from creative growth to collaboration and discipline.

The release follows a busy period for the Montreal musician, who spent the past year touring across North America with R&B artist Kyle Dion, contributing production work to several of Dion’s recent projects. One of Koko Love’s standout tracks, “Man I’m Not” featuring Zach Zoya, reached number three on CBC Radio and was included in CBC’s list of the 100 Best Songs of 2025.

Koko Love has also collaborated with artists including Chiiild and Medasin, while sharing stages with acts such as Laundry Day and renforshort.

Originally starting out busking in Montreal’s metro system, Koko Love has steadily built a reputation for his focus on real-world musical connection. His debut LP marks a new chapter for the artist, who previously released music under the name Miko before relaunching his career with a fresh identity.

With The Cost of Freedom now widely available, Koko Love continues his mission of bringing alternative music to a broader audience while maintaining the grassroots spirit that helped shape his debut.
