Manchester’s seven-piece MLEKO return with their latest single ‘Denouement’—a visceral, shape-shifting introduction to their forthcoming debut EP The Feast of St. Perpetua, arriving May 1st via Heist Or Hit.
Opening the record, ‘Denouement’ sets the tone for a project that thrives on tension and contradiction. Recorded at Low Four Studios with Samuel William Jones (Maruja, Robin Richards), the track captures the band’s signature collision of beauty and brutality—where poetic lyricism meets sonic abrasion. “The children all weep for their denouement…” intones frontman Ed Whirledge, ushering listeners into a world that’s equal parts ritualistic and chaotic.
MLEKO have dubbed their sound “Gub Rock”—a deliberately slippery label that reflects their refusal to be pinned down. Drawing from post-punk, art rock, prog and beyond, their music resists categorisation, instead embracing a maximalist approach where sax and trumpet stab through dense arrangements, guitars churn, and rhythms hit with unrelenting force.
Following early support from BBC Radio and tastemaker press, as well as the sprawling ambition of previous single ‘Tom’s Tune’, ‘Denouement’ marks another bold step forward for a band quickly building a reputation for their uncompromising vision.
That reputation is only amplified on stage. Known for their intense, almost transcendental live shows—complete with their now-signature “Gubs” hanging from instruments—MLEKO have been steadily making their mark across the UK’s underground circuit, including a sold-out show at Manchester’s Castle Hotel.
With a run of live dates lined up this spring, including stops in Leeds, Bristol, London and Manchester, MLEKO are poised to take their chaotic, immersive sound to wider audiences.
If The Feast of St. Perpetua is anything like its opening statement, it won’t just be heard—it’ll be felt.
