Jaakko Eino Kalevi makes a striking return with “Black Diamond”, an ambitious, eight-minute odyssey that sees the Finnish artist once again bending genre and expectation to his will.
Described as a “baroque melodrama”, the track is a sprawling, shape-shifting piece that draws unlikely connections between the worlds of Goblin, Cerrone and Lindstrøm, fusing cinematic prog, disco and cosmic electronica into something entirely his own. The result is a hypnotic, slow-burning composition that unfolds with theatrical flair and meticulous detail.
At its core, “Black Diamond” explores the idea of an impossible relationship — something elusive, addictive and constantly evolving. The track itself mirrors that sentiment, morphing across its runtime with a restless, unpredictable energy.
The single also arrives with a layer of personal history. Originally released by Stratovarius three decades ago, Kalevi reimagines the power metal classic through a completely different lens — one shaped by his early musical influences and a long-held belief that the song could transcend its original form, even landing on a disco floor.
Recorded and produced by Kalevi in Athens, the track is entirely self-performed, with the artist handling every instrument. Central to its unique texture is a baroque-style harpsichord sound, recreated using a vintage Korg Polysix synthesizer, adding a rich, ornate layer to the track’s cosmic framework.
Marking his first new material since his 2025 dub of “Cyborg” from Chaos Magic, “Black Diamond” is yet another left turn from an artist who thrives on reinvention. With recent collaborations and remixes already in motion, Kalevi’s latest release reinforces his status as one of the most quietly unpredictable figures in contemporary electronic music.
