¡Forward, Russia! Unleash Long-Lost Seven-Minute Epic ‘Don’t Be A Doctor’ on Streaming for the First Time

The Leeds post-punk favourites resurrect a cult deep cut ahead of their Give Me A Wall 20th anniversary reissue and forthcoming rarities collection A Fearless Guide to Communication.
¡Forward, Russia! have unearthed a long-lost gem from their catalogue, with ‘Don’t Be A Doctor’ arriving on streaming platforms for the first time ever.
Originally released between the Leeds four-piece’s debut album Give Me A Wall and its follow-up Life Processes, the 7:23-minute epic was issued on a limited, single-sided 10-inch, with an etched octopus occupying the reverse. Now, the track finally gets a wider audience, offering a thrilling snapshot of a band at their most unrestrained.
Written during soundchecks and fleeting moments on the road while relentlessly touring Give Me A Wall, ‘Don’t Be A Doctor’ was born out of frustration with playing the same material night after night. As vocalist Tom Woodhead explains, the band responded by throwing every idea they had into one sprawling, gloriously excessive composition.
The result is a restless, shape-shifting odyssey that moves from a subdued lament to a full-blown, laser-charged explosion, repeatedly dismantling and rebuilding itself along the way. Its surreal narrative follows an octopus detective wrestling with questions of identity and the senselessness of murder, all before an audience that veers between indifference and hostility. Naturally.
The release arrives at a pivotal moment for the band’s legacy. Formed in Leeds in 2004, ¡Forward, Russia! rapidly established themselves as one of the UK’s most distinctive alternative acts, pairing angular, frenetic post-punk with explosive live performances and an uncompromising DIY spirit. Their 2006 debut, Give Me A Wall, proved a critical and commercial breakthrough, with singles ‘Nine’ and ‘Twelve’ both reaching the UK Top 40. Follow-up Life Processes arrived in 2008, before the band entered hiatus later that year.
Now, their early catalogue is getting a fresh look. A limited-edition clear vinyl reissue of Give Me A Wall lands on 16th October via Launchpad+ and EMI North, marking 20 years since its original release. The edition includes a new lyric sheet and sleeve notes from BBC 6 Music broadcaster and long-time champion Steve Lamacq.
Further rarities follow on 30th October with A Fearless Guide to Communication, a 12-track digital collection featuring ‘Don’t Be A Doctor’, ‘Reflection Symmetry’ and original 7-inch versions of ‘Nine’, ‘Thirteen’ and ‘Fourteen’.
The celebrations will continue into 2027, when ¡Forward, Russia! return to the stage for anniversary shows at Glasgow’s King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut, London’s Oslo and Leeds’ Brudenell Social Club. The London date and both Leeds shows have already sold out, leaving Glasgow as the remaining opportunity to catch the band live.
For a band whose music was never short on ambition, ‘Don’t Be A Doctor’ is a fitting rediscovery: strange, sprawling and gloriously unpredictable. Two decades on, it remains a reminder of exactly what made ¡Forward, Russia! such a singular force in British alternative music.
‘Don’t Be A Doctor’ is out now via Launchpad+ and EMI North. A Fearless Guide to Communication follows on 30th October 2026.
