BabyStep Awards 2020: The Nominations
Whilst in many ways this year has felt at times unproductive and mundane, we have been so inspired by the continued efforts of creative people from in and around Leeds throughout the year. In these unfamilar and uncertain times, so many amazing artists, collectives, radio stations, and DJs have used their time to keep on creating to and support each other, and we want to acknowledge the resilience that the creative scene has shown throughout these trying months. Following the success of their debut charity VA 'WE ARE VIABLE', Leeds based Gimme A Break Records are back once again with selection of festive wobblers to inject some energy into what we can all agree is a generally rubbish Christmas. Hailing from York, JAYNE is a sing-songwriter who, after beginning her journey with open mic nights, soon concluded that she wanted to take her sound further: "Having started as an acoustic artist who never quite fit the folk mould, I have developed an atmospheric sound for this single with producer Isaac McInnis (Benjamin Francis Leftwich, The Howl & The Hum), drawing influences from artists such as The xx and Jeff Buckley." 'We Will Always Love You': The Avalanches Release Their Third Album
Melbourne-based duo The Avalanches are a notoriously hard group to pin down stylistically, due to their unique composition of so many different musical movements ranging from trip-hop to disco. One term which they tend to be labelled with more than any other is Sampledelia, and though this may sound like one of the hundreds of genres that Spotify invented this year, it’s a sound that is very much alive across many iconic acts such as DJ Shadow and A Guy Called Gerald. Breaking Down the Garage Door with Kitson
Last summer I went over to Pula, Croatia to go to Outlook festival. It was a great experience and it almost doesn’t feel real given the context of this year. The lineup was very impressive, but I remember one set over the rest. We stumbled into the Subdub arena and were abruptly met with a quiet stage, presenting three men. There were no instruments, no decks, nothing but themselves. They went on to beatbox Drum and Bass whilst everyone tried to figure out how they’d pulled a
