weavercreek Turns Loneliness Into a Dangerous Companion on New Single ‘my new best friend’

Indie-folk artist weavercreek has found an unlikely best friend: loneliness. And it’s slowly killing him.
Jonesboro, Arkansas artist weavercreek returns with his gut-punching new single ‘my new best friend’, a stripped-back, deeply personal exploration of isolation, friendship and the fear of never finding your people.
Written during his first semester of college, the track captures the suffocating loneliness of arriving somewhere new without knowing anyone. Rather than simply documenting that feeling, weavercreek gives it a name — turning loneliness itself into a character, a constant companion that follows him everywhere.
“The lyrics personify the loneliness I was feeling as a sort of life partner.”
It’s a simple idea with devastating consequences. What begins as an attempt to make peace with being alone gradually becomes something darker, as the narrator realises that the companion he has created is consuming him. By the song’s closing refrain — “he’s killing me” — the relationship has become impossible to escape.
Sonically, ‘my new best friend’ lives in the space between intimacy and unease. Soft acoustic guitar provides its foundation, while delicate drums and mournful violin gradually build beneath weavercreek’s increasingly exposed vocals. There’s a familiar intimacy for fans of Phoebe Bridgers and Sufjan Stevens, but the songwriting remains distinctly his own: confessional, understated and brutally honest.
The timing of the release makes its central question hit even harder. As students head back to college, move to new cities and begin unfamiliar chapters, the excitement of a fresh start can quickly give way to an uncomfortable reality: what happens when everyone around you seems to have found their people except you?
‘my new best friend’ doesn’t offer an easy answer. Instead, it gives that feeling a voice — and, perhaps more importantly, reminds anyone experiencing it that they aren’t the only one.
For weavercreek, that honesty is at the heart of the project. Growing up queer in the rural American South, his music draws on nostalgia, isolation and the complicated process of finding a sense of belonging. His folk-driven sound pairs expressive vocals with intimate storytelling, creating songs that feel less like performances and more like windows into his inner world.
With ‘my new best friend’, loneliness isn’t simply the subject of the song. It’s the character, the narrator and ultimately the villain.
