The Howl & The Hum Return with New Single and Announce Second Album 'Same Mistake Twice'

Leeds-based songwriter Sam Griffiths is back with new music from The Howl & The Hum, announcing the band's long-awaited second album, Same Mistake Twice, set for release on September 6th, 2024, via Miserable Disco. This marks the first new material from the band since 2021, following the critically acclaimed 2020 debut, Human Contact.

The title track and first single, "Same Mistake Twice," sets the tone for an album that delves into the complexities of personal growth and the tumultuous events of recent years. Throughout the album, Griffiths confronts themes of anxiety, uncertainty, and the aftermath of a band breakup. The music navigates between raw vulnerability and explosive energy, with influences from a diverse range of artists, including Bruce Springsteen, Big Thief, and The National.

Griffiths worked with songwriters Elanor Moss and Matthew Herd (Seafarers), as well as producer Joseph Futak (Tapir!, Lilo), to create an album that captures a sense of emotional honesty and self-reflection. The single "Same Mistake Twice" combines a haunting baritone with a powerful chorus, merging euphoria with introspection. It's a sound that bridges the gap between genres, drawing on the rawness of Neutral Milk Hotel and the depth of folk and country legends like John Prine and Townes Van Zandt.

Griffiths describes the new album as "an album about Dread. About a very real, everyday dread so many of us feel surrounded by screens showing us how we should be, what a good person is, what a bad person is." He adds, "Every person is flawed, every person has baggage, shrapnel they take with them that makes the airport security beep. This album is about acknowledging that shrapnel, poking it, flipping it, and seeing what lives under it, and learning to fall in love with the version of yourself full of holes and missing pieces."

The forthcoming album represents a journey of acceptance, as Griffiths navigates the loss of a band, fading friendships, and rekindled connections. It is a heartfelt exploration of vulnerability and resilience, with Griffiths' voice providing a compelling narrative through each track.

With Same Mistake Twice, The Howl & The Hum are poised to make a strong return, offering listeners an emotive and thought-provoking musical experience. Be sure to check out the new single and pre-order the album ahead of its September 2024 release.
