The Homesick Announce New Album What’s Up With All These Shangri-Las?, Share Space-Disco Single ‘Policelessness’

Dutch art-pop adventurers The Homesick have announced their fourth studio album, What’s Up With All These Shangri-Las?, due for release on 18 September via Siluh Records. Alongside the news, the trio have unveiled the record’s latest preview, the gleaming, high-speed synth-pop cut ‘Policelessness’.

A thrilling collision of space disco, new wave, krautrock and city-pop, ‘Policelessness’ channels the energy of an ’80s cop-film car chase through The Homesick’s uniquely offbeat lens. The track arrives as the second taste of the forthcoming album, following April’s acclaimed single ‘Esperanto’.

For the first time, the band have teamed up with Amsterdam-based producer, artist and DJ Rimer London, crafting an album that unfolds as a continuous ten-track mix. Packed with references ranging from John Calvin and Nostradamus to Esperanto creator Lejzer Zamenhof, What’s Up With All These Shangri-Las? promises a playful, retrofuturist world where club music, art-pop and psychedelic experimentation collide.

Speaking about the new single, vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Jaap van der Velde explained that the song grew from an ’80s dancehall-inspired jam and evolved around the idea of a character forever pursued by the police — or perhaps even romantically entangled with them. The final album version expands on the band’s long-standing live favourite with Nile Rodgers-inspired guitar flourishes, added percussion and a wealth of cinematic synth textures.

The announcement marks another unexpected turn in The Homesick’s decade-long career, which has seen the Dutch trio move effortlessly between DIY releases, acclaimed albums on Sub Pop and increasingly adventurous explorations of psych-pop and post-punk.

To celebrate the album release, The Homesick will embark on an extensive European tour this autumn, including appearances at Hamburg’s Reeperbahn Festival, Vienna’s Plum! Festival and headline dates across Germany, France, Switzerland and the Netherlands.
