Nathan Shubert unveils haunting new EP Doubts and Loves Like a Mole

Berlin-based modern classical pianist and composer Nathan Shubert has released their new EP Doubts and Loves Like a Mole, a three-track meditation on place, belonging and the uneasy process of finding home.
Out today via independent label Bigo & Twigetti, the EP was written and recorded during Shubert’s move from Canada to Berlin, capturing the emotional tension between leaving somewhere familiar and putting down roots somewhere new.
At its centre is Shubert’s felted piano, recorded in a Neukölln Altbau alongside clarinet from Sam Davidson, trumpet from Fabian Rosenberg and bowed saw from Sofia Nystrand. The intimate recordings leave plenty of space for the sounds of the surrounding room to seep into the music — creaking floors, birds at the windows and distant everyday life becoming part of the compositions.
The EP’s final single, Wander, is its most sparse and atmospheric moment. Shubert describes the piece as “more haunted than sad, the sound of a room someone has just left”, with clarinet and bowed saw circling the piano to create an eerie, almost physical sense of absence.
Across its three tracks — Schillerpromenade, Kopenhagener and Wander — Doubts and Loves Like a Mole turns the small details of domestic spaces and relocation into something quietly cinematic.
For Shubert, the piano is not simply an instrument but a landscape: felt, wood, pedal noise and soft hammers all become part of the listening experience. The result is modern classical music that feels less like a performance in a room than an invitation to inhabit one.
Doubts and Loves Like a Mole is out now on streaming services and digital platforms via Bigo & Twigetti.
