New York-based artist Montell Fish returns with a hazy, heartfelt new offering, teaming up with the elusive Clara La San for their collaborative single Love You Right. The track marks Fish’s first release of the year—and it’s a striking reintroduction.
Built on soft-focus production and weightless melodies, “Love You Right” sits comfortably in the growing space between ambient music and alternative R&B. Produced by Fish himself, the song pairs atmospheric textures with intimate, longing vocals, allowing both artists to lean into their shared sensibility for emotional minimalism. The result is a slow-burning, late-night listen that feels both nostalgic and fresh.
Fish describes the track as a personal homage to the genre blend that shaped his early listening habits. Drawing inspiration from artists like Miguel, Corbin, and Majid Jordan, he explains that the song taps into a teenage sense of discovery: a moment where ambience and R&B first collided in a meaningful way. Clara La San’s contribution, he notes, elevates the track entirely—her “angelic” tone gliding effortlessly over his production.
The release also signals a broader creative shift. Earlier this month, Fish expanded his artistic reach by composing the score for Anima, the debut narrative feature from director Brian Tetsuro Ivie, which premiered at SXSW to strong early reception. It’s a move that underscores his growing versatility beyond traditional songcraft.
“Love You Right” follows a period of experimentation for Fish, who recently explored new sonic territory under his alter ego dj gummy bear. That project, The Spirit Still Remains (Purgatory), served as a creative reset—loosening expectations and allowing him to push boundaries across genres. Tracks like Ostentatious, featuring John Glacier, hinted at the fluidity that continues to define his work.
Following a prolific 2025—spanning dance, trap, and stripped-back acoustic releases—Fish also took his sound global with a sold-out Australian run on The Dream Deer Tour, alongside festival appearances across North America and Europe, including a notable stop at All Points East in London.
With “Love You Right,” Montell Fish doesn’t just return—he refines. Teaming up with Clara La San, he leans deeper into atmosphere, emotion, and restraint, delivering a track that lingers long after it fades out.
