Hull alternative four-piece LIFE have unveiled their soaring new single ‘My Yan’, the final preview of their forthcoming fourth album ABSTRACT / NATURAL, due for release on 19 June via EMI North and Launchpad+.
A shimmering, emotionally charged indie-rock anthem, ‘My Yan’ captures LIFE at their most expansive and uplifting. Driven by the propulsive rhythm section of Lydia Palmeira and Stewart Baxter, and elevated by Mick Sanders’ luminous guitar work, the track unfolds into a widescreen meditation on love, freedom and new beginnings.
Written by frontman Mez Sanders-Green during time spent exploring the Lake District, ‘My Yan’ draws inspiration from the landscapes and folklore of Cumbria. The title references the old Cumbrian word for “one”, traditionally used by shepherds when counting sheep.
Speaking about the song, Sanders-Green explains: “This track is a love song. Yan in old Cumbrian means ‘one’, so I'm saying ‘The One’. It’s the band’s favourite track from the album. The middle-eight has all this space and dreamlike texture before building towards a monumental outro that we hope sounds like a journey towards new beginnings.”
The single serves as a fitting introduction to ABSTRACT / NATURAL, an ambitious record that sees LIFE pushing their creative boundaries while remaining rooted in the DIY ethos and community spirit that have defined the band since their emergence from Hull’s vibrant music scene.
Recorded at the band’s self-built Humber-side studio, The Moon Factory, the album blends deeply personal storytelling with mythology, folklore and observations gathered during Sanders-Green’s long-distance walks across Britain’s landscapes. Produced by Stewart Baxter and Oliver Varga, mixed by James Kenosha and mastered by Stephen Kerrison, the record is already shaping up to be LIFE’s most adventurous work to date.
Championed by BBC 6 Music favourites including Steve Lamacq, Huw Stephens and Chris Hawkins, LIFE continue to cement their reputation as one of the UK’s most distinctive and community-focused alternative bands.
ABSTRACT / NATURAL arrives on 19 June, with a run of instore performances and headline dates set to follow throughout the summer and autumn.
