Irish singer-songwriter Ivan Nicolas returns with Train On Fire, a punchy new indie-rock single that captures the electric feeling of a night out just before everything tips over the edge. Built around driving guitars, steady rhythms and a sense of momentum, the track blends nostalgia with urgency, reflecting Nicolas’ ability to pair reflective songwriting with anthemic energy.
Already gaining radio support from BBC Introducing, RTÉ 2FM and international stations, Nicolas continues to build momentum ahead of his forthcoming debut album, produced by Dani Castelar and Gavin Fitzjohn. With Train On Fire, he bottles the chaos, celebration and tension of those fleeting late-night moments into a track designed to hit hard both on record and on stage.
Your new single ‘Train On Fire’ captures the energy of a night out just before everything unravels — what inspired that moment and how did it turn into a song?
A few too many good nights out inspired the song. I’m not championing substances, it just seemed to be part of my life for a moment and I thought I better bottle this.
The track has a big, anthemic indie-rock feel. Was that always the direction you imagined for the song, or did the sound evolve during the recording process?
I wrote the song on an acoustic guitar but yeah always wanted the production to complement the energy.
Your music often balances reflective lyrics with powerful instrumentation. How do you approach writing songs that feel both personal and built for a live audience?
I love playing live to an audience and live music but I seem to have this thing going in the winter im writing lots of lyrics then come summer lots of songs / melodies appear and then I use the lyrics, it’s not really planned that way as such…
You’re currently working towards a debut album with producers Dani Castelar and Gavin Fitzjohn. What has that collaboration brought to your sound and creative process?
Dani is an amazing engineer, he gets a great sound in the studio very quickly so it all moves at speed, he mixed the tracks too and Gav is just an all-round genius and get where I’m coming from, I feel lucky to have worked with them.
With radio support from BBC Introducing, RTÉ 2FM and international stations, momentum is clearly building. How does it feel seeing your music reach new audiences as you prepare to release more material?
Yeah I massively appreciate anyone who supports my music, I’m very grateful. Can’t wait to play some live shows next.
