Darling I Dreamt turns late nights and lost love into electrifying Recession Pop EP

Digital pop provocateur Darling I Dreamt has unveiled new EP Recession Pop, a four-track collision of hyperpop, emo and 2010s pop nostalgia, out today via APOLLO Distribution.

The project, the latest from genre-blurring creator Jonah Michael, arrives alongside its final single, 2nite — a bass-heavy blast of ’00s R&B nostalgia built for the after-hours.

Described by Michael as a song about “fumbling a baddie at the club”, 2nite combines blown-out low end with an intentionally emo edge, pairing late-night vulnerability with the kind of huge subwoofer energy designed to shake a car — or a dancefloor.

The track follows previous singles What You Want, Watch The Sun Go Down and Nothing Like It, bringing them together for an EP that taps into the escapism, excess and emotional messiness of the night.

For Darling I Dreamt, that means turning insomnia into an aesthetic. Drawing on the emotional intensity of emo, the maximalism of hyperpop and the glossy escapism of so-called recession-era pop, Michael makes music for “Gen Z overfeelers who stay out too late”.

There’s a distinctly nostalgic streak running through Recession Pop, but the execution is firmly contemporary. 2nite is the clearest example: huge bass, pop hooks and a restless club energy collide with the bruised romanticism of a night that didn’t quite go according to plan.

The new EP lands as Darling I Dreamt continues to build momentum, with previous releases earning BBC Introducing support and the project establishing itself as one to watch in the UK’s increasingly fluid digital-pop underground.
