BabyStep's New Music Friday #6
Evening all, we hope you've had a good week and stayed positive with everything going on. You'll have to excuse us for the slight dip in the amount of content we've been releasing, things are starting to look a lot busier since we've moved back into our studio and have been planning for the future with events. We have a load to tell you about, but you'll have to wait just a bit longer. In the meantime you can get stuck into some truly amazing articles that have been written for us this week: read Zahin Ali's review of the new J Cole Release, as well as George Webb's round up on the British Mercury Awards. Without further ado here are our top picks for the releases out this Friday.
Gorillaz - PAC-MAN ft. ScHoolboy Q (Episode Five)
It’s the fifth instalment of their ‘Song Machine’ series and was co-produced by Remi Kabaka Jr and Paul Edward Huston, aka Prince Paul. ‘PAC-MAN’ is an ode to the retro game of the same name, which celebrated its 40th anniversary in May. The track’s colourful clip shows Gorillaz frontman Damon Albarn as 2-D absorbed in the arcade classic, while a neon ScHoolboy Q raps his verse from home. Other band members Noodle, Russel and Murdoc also feature as their animated selves.
Kylie Minogue - Say Something
The song, “Say Something,” is an introspective dance track with lyrics that feel pertinent for our quarantine days: “We’re a million miles apart in a thousand ways…Love is love it never ends, can we all be as one again?” Minogue produced the track with long-time collaborator Biff Stannard.
Dua Lipa- Hallucinate (Paul Woolford Remix)
Wow, what a collab. Paul Woolford(aka Special Request) has brought an amazing new energy to a song that already has had people dancing this year. It's directly aligned to the vision Dua Lipa had for the Album, “It’s such an upbeat, high-tempo album that you would just want to dance to. I wasn’t sure if it was really the time to put it out — to celebrate, I guess, during a time of so much suffering.”
Alewya - Sweating (Breakage Remix)
The track is sexy. It’s made for the club with its pulsating beats and breathy vocals, where Alewya commands listeners to “Keep sweating”. It’s about closeness, chemistry, catching the eye of a fittie on the dancefloor, feeling powerful, feeling yourself.
Logic- Celebration
The rapper’s sixth studio effort, which is due out tomorrow (July 24), was revealed to be his last earlier this month. “Officially announcing my retirement with the release of ‘No Pressure’ executive produced by No I.D. July 24th,” he previously wrote on Twitter. “It’s been a great decade. Now it’s time to be a great father.”
The Avalanches - Wherever You Go (Visualiser) ft. Jamie xx, Neneh Cherry, CLYPSO
The Avalanches have released two brand new singles, ‘Reflecting Light’ and ‘Wherever You Go’ — you can listen to the tracks below. Both tracks, which premiered on the BBC 6 Music Breakfast Show this morning (July 22), serve as a fresh preview of the band’s forthcoming new album, which will follow on from 2016’s ‘Wildflower’. ‘Wherever You Go’ features co-production from Jamie XX and guest vocals from Neneh Cherry and CLYPSO, with The Avalanches saying in a statement that they hope the song will offer hope in the face of “the whole damn world incinerating”.
