The Breakdown: 'She Can't See Me' By The Luna Pines

Luna Pines are a Leeds duo who have released an onslaught of music throughout 2020, all of which demonstrates their incredible ability to fuse pop and dance music in a euphoric and melodic way. They’ve already picked up huge support from BBC Introducing London and Sofar Sounds and have featured on Spotify’s New Music Friday, Fresh Finds, Easy and Evening Indie Playlists. We got the lowdown on the lyrics from their latest release 'She Can't See Me'.

Verse 1

I was begging you please don't leave

I'm nearly what you want

I was begging you please don't leave

I'm nearly what you want

This verse sums up the song quite nicely. It’s about being in love with people who don’t see you in that way, or maybe don’t even know you at all. I remember writing it after hearing this Deaf Havana tune where he goes ‘I fall in love each day on the train’ and I liked that idea of the possibility of falling in love with strangers that you’ll never see again. I’ve often felt not good enough for other people and that maybe if I tried harder and had better personal attributes that I could be what people want. I always feel nearly there but not quite, and I don’t think I ever will be.

Chorus

And you were crying on the bathroom floor

do you never really want more?

That line I wrote about a friend of mine who was and is struggling with a drug addiction that she can’t seem to see as a problem. We spent our whole lives as best friends since we were 4 and we’re always very self destructive when we’re together, and as people apart. It’s about looking at the low point you’re in and not understanding why you’re so comfortable with it.

and you were giving it all away

to someone who won't stay

This is about a girl who I really liked who told me she was seeing someone else - it’s kind of about that feeling of knowing how good something could be but the situation is just out of reach at that moment.

and you're the centre of everything

or was it just in my dream?

and you got everything in front of you

but you still can't see me

This is kind of about feeling of desperately wanting someone to see you in the positive light that you can’t see yourself in.

Verse 2

And when it's time to give it up

I'll still be waiting

This is about how I can never move on from situations and how people really stick to me like glue

good luck and do your best

is all they were saying

i got the answers here

but i couldn't find anyone

this house is not my own

i told you on the telephone

it'd never the way you want

and I am leaving it alone

I am leaving it alone

This whole verse is about how when I moved to London, I felt so small and insignificant. I didn’t have my own space anymore, and everything was too big for me to take in. It’s such a difficult place to keep on top of and I feel often like it swallows me a lot. ‘I got the answers here but I couldn’t find anyone’ kind of narrates how I got the job I wanted and essentially should’ve been really happy but I felt, and still feel, very alone.

so put me in your glass house

and take me out when we're older

I'll tell you when we're older

I'll tell you when we're…

This part is about how I constantly put things off and think there will be time later. The glass house bit is basically me saying if I’m in a glass house I’ll be way more careful with what I say so to not hurt anyone. I always think when I’m older it will all be better and I’ll be more honest but I never am.

Chorus

And you were crying on the bathroom floor

do you never really want more?

and you were giving it all away

to someone who won't stay

and you're the centre of everything

or was it just in my dream?

and you got everything in front of you

but you still can't see me

but you still can't see me

I'll tell you when we're older

I'll tell you when we're older...
