BabyStep's New Music Friday

In todays world we find ourselves digging for tracks and discovering new music in a medley of ways, whether it's taking advantage of Spotify's recommended playlists, Shazaming a tune at an afters or finally having all of those B's answered on the IOM group. There are just so many ways of discovering music that it appears that a lot of the most organic ways of doing so have been shunned, like heading to your local record store. As I write this I realise I am very much guilty of this myself, I'd much rather see who Anthony Fantano hails as the new 'IT BAND' then head down to Jumbo Records in town and find out for myself. A classic but equally refreshing way of coming across new music came to me during lockdown, gifted upon me by good mate & music lover Joe Childs. Every Friday Joe would fill me and my housemates in on what had been released that day, always bringing a medley of styles, genres and artists to the table.

It has turned into somewhat of a weekly tradition for Joe to provide us with the Friday essentials that end up becoming the soundtrack to our weekend, being blared out till the early hours of Saturday and stored in our playlists long after. It was a no brainer that other people had to be part of this weekend tradition, so we've decided to document Joe's new music Friday for you to all get stuck in to. Here are Joe's Top Picks for New Music Friday that will help you before, during and long after the weekend ahead. Enjoy:

Anderson.Paak- Lockdown

Anderson .Paak has shared a new song called “Lockdown” along with an accompanying music video directed by Dave Meyers. The visual features cameos from Syd, Jay Rock, Andra Day, Dominic Fike, and others, and focuses on themes of police brutality, racial injustice, and protest. Many of the artists featured in the clip also wear face masks—a visual representation of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Special Request - Spectral Frequency

Special Request, aka Paul Woolford, is releasing a new EP, titled Spectral Frequency, via R&S this July.

Its title tune, ‘Spectral Frequency’, first appeared on Woolford’s Zero Fucks album at the end of 2019, before he teamed up with R&S to release it as part of a four-track EP.

Robyn - Honey (Avalon Emerson's Deep Current Reroll)

Posting on Twitter, Robyn also detailed that Avalon played the track at Corsica Studios at the end of last year. Robyn hand delivered a test pressing of the remix to her. The remix features on a special vinyl release which is dropping this weekend (20 June) as part of Love Record Stores Day. Other remixes on the release come courtesy of Louie Vega, Young Marco, Yaeji, Floorplan, Kim Ann Foxman, The Black Madonna, Joe Goddard and others.

Soccer Mommy - circle the drain (Gentle Dom - Andrew VanWyngarden of MGMT Remix)

Soccer Mommy has collaborated up with MGMT‘s Andrew VanWyngarden for the latest instalment in her ‘Soccer Mommy & Friends Singles Series’ — you can hear the two artists rework one another’s songs below. For this instalment in the series of singles, Soccer Mommy has covered MGMT’s ‘Indie Rokkers’ while Gentle Dom has remixed Soccer Mommy’s ‘Circle The Drain’.

NOSSO RITMO (feat. Confidence Man) [Remixes, Pt. 1]

Hot off the back of his critically acclaimed ‘Nosso Ritmo’ album, French electronic powerhouse Yuksek returns with the first in a series of remix EPs, this time featuring Dombrance, Mighty Mouse, Chloé and Jack Burton. This is the first part of what is set to be an unmissable remix project with a stellar cast which will also include Inigo Vontier, Bosto Bun, Kraak & Smaak, Rubin Steiner, Youman, Daniel Wang, Getaroom, Bosq, The Mikanism, Mark Lower and Jkriv.
